The Vean - Caerhays Castle Estate - Falmouth Cornwall

The Vean, originally built as a rectory in the 1830’s, is a fine Georgian country house and is part of the Caerhays Castle Estate. It stands alone on a south facing hill over lush green pastures filled with cattle and sheep quietly grazing and has far reaching views of the Caerhays Castle Estate and Garden which boasts an international reputation for its camellias and rhododendrons and is home to one of England's finest magnolia collections. The English Heritage Grade I listed Castle was designed and built over 200 years ago by the English architect, John Nash and is owned by the Williams family who still reside there today. Fully restored in 2009, The Vean is furnished as an elegant period Georgian country house with the addition of modern heating and plumbing systems designed to provide the highest standards of luxury and comfort. A spacious hallway displays the very grandness, the cosy and informal Sitting Room is a place to relax, the Drawing Room is a light and elegant room furnished with Georgian period pieces and has access to a verandah giving far reaching vistas. This room leads on to the Dining Room decorated in a similar theme and is dominated by a handmade mahogany Chippendale style dining table, specially commissioned for The Vean.

The bedrooms have been individually designed in the late Georgian style, each one unique, with a character of its own. They have beautifully interlined curtains, antique mirrors, desks or dressing tables all carefully chosen. All the bedrooms have sumptuous 6ft beds that can be separated to provide two singles if preferred with crisp linen and throws, en-suite bathrooms with limestone floors, simple but elegant fixtures and fittings, luxurious bath towels, robes, Molton Brown toiletries, hair dryers, televisions and wifi. The Superior Rooms, on the first floor are very spacious and have large Georgian sash windows, the bathrooms have both a tub and walk-in showers. The Standard Rooms on the second floor offer a cosy feel but are still well appointed and with a tub in the bathroom with shower over.

The Housekeeper and team will be on hand to attend to our needs and our own personal chef will prepare some wonderful meals for us celebrating the very best of Cornwall’s local seasonal produce. There is also a bar service available at The Vean.

It is very difficult not to be overwhelmed by the location of The Vean, you will be captivated by its natural Cornish beauty, tranquility, architectural surprises and the inescapable sense of England's history.

Hotel Endsleigh - Tamar Valley - Near Dartmoor

English Heritage Grade 1 listed Hotel Endsleigh lies at the end of a long secluded driveway surrounded by 108 acres of wild woodlands and landscaped gardens which were designed by Humphry Repton in 1811. Endsleigh was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyattville for the 6th Duke and Duchess of Bedford in 1810 and at the time the family owned no less than a third of Devon. In 2004 careful restoration returned Endsleigh to its former elegance, with original wallpaper painted with exotic birds in the bedrooms, busts and vintage books in the drawing room and Regency panelling in the dining room. Majestic lawns sweep down to the fast flowing River Tamar whilst an outstanding arboretum and splendid rose terraces are accompanied by Gothic grottos and extravagant landscape follies fashionable some two centuries ago – all quite simply magical. In the summer, playing croquet on the lawn feels positively Gatsby-esque. Throughout, original furnishings, brightly coloured textiles and contemporary art have been combined expertly with period furniture and paintings. From the grand hallway runs a series of panelled rooms, the dining areas, drawing room, library and bar, each more stunning than the last. Huge fire places with built-in stone seats, polished wooden floors, book lined shelves and a vast array of candles contribute to the warmth and serenity, definitely Regency grandeur at its best.

Each of the bedrooms are very different, quirky and whilst they have been extensively modernised, they still display much of the Regency style. All are furnished with rich fabrics of the utmost quality, beautiful crisp bedding and Irish linen on comfortable 6ft beds, some rooms can provide singles. The Queen Victoria’s Room (so called because the Queen once slept there), retains its original hand painted wallpaper of leaves and flowers. The bathrooms, all with tubs with shower over or hand shower, feature marble, granite, seagrass matting and paintings, coupled with luxurious REN toiletries, an abundance of soft towels, robes and hairdryers. Other amenities include TVs, DVD and CD players and Wifi access - carefully chosen antique books are also a lovely addition. The Superior Rooms are located on the first floor and are predominantly a larger room with garden views, they showcase wonderfully preserved hand painted wallpapers. The Standard Rooms are located on the second floor and are smaller but well appointed, uniquely designed with an equal amount of comfort and luxury.

Eating at Endsleigh will also be a celebrated affair, not only has detailed attention been paid to the china located in the dining room, each piece has been decorated with a different leaf motif inspired by Repton’s 1814 designs for the gardens but, there are an array of panelled rooms where we can dine, the most talented chefs and sommeliers will spoil us using some of the very best foods and wines available in the South West of England.

Hotel Endsleigh effortlessly combines history with comfort and elegance but more importantly, it is a very personal place. They say “we want everyone to feel at home here, we should like guests to feel they are staying with people that they don’t know very well, but hope to get to know better”
