Cornwall Holds Beautiful Contrasts to Make You Stop and Wonder

Your journey with us begins in the lively Cornish City of Truro, easily accessible with direct trains from London, arrive early for a chance to visit the striking Gothic Truro Cathedral or the Royal Cornwall Museum of fine art. We travel to The Vean, a luxury country house retreat set in the Caerhays Castle Estate, home for the southern part of our Cornwall tour. Over the next four days hiking we will show you the highlights of southern Cornwall, places and sights only reachable on foot. We explore the contrasts of this area walking from Porthscatho along the South West Coast Path around the Roseland Peninsula, which almost shrouds St Mawes Castle from the sea, to the subtropical setting of the 13th Century St Just in Roseland Church. At Lizard Point we visit the Lighthouse Heritage Centre before walking the coast to Kynance Cove then on to the sleepy Helford River and Daphne Du Maurier's 'Frenchman's Creek'. In the far west Botallack Mine set on this rugged coast is a reminder of the hardship Cornish miners had to face. We walk south to Cape Cornwall and then inland to the robust mining village of St Just perhaps for a Cornish Pasty and Pint of Cornish Ale in a traditional pub, before travelling to Porthcurno home to the Minack Theatre carved out of the rocky cliff high over the ocean. Independent excursions are possible each day, you might just want to visit the Caerhays Castle Gardens or swim at the local beach, otherwise The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the The Eden Project are nearby.

The North Coast and Dartmoor are Ingrained with Ancient English History

Fowey is a charming harbour side town entrenched with Daphne Du Maurier references and the best way to approach is from the coast, walking around Gribben Head past St Catherine's Castle and into the narrow streets rich with local craft shops and eateries. Our tour takes us further north to our new home Hotel Endsleigh an English Heritage Grade 1 listed hunting lodge built for the 6th Duke and Duchess of Bedford that overlooks the River Tamar. A day on Dartmoor, England's most southerly National Park, is a must, we visit the High Moorland Visitors Centre before venturing out to explore the edges of Fox Tor Mire better known as Grimpen Mire in the Hounds of the Baskervilles. Chagford is our next stop, this ancient moorland village oozes atmosphere with ‘The Real Lorna Doone’ resting in the graveyard and the 13th century Three Crowns Hotel. We walk across the moor to examine Bronze Age hut circles and Dartmoor’s own Stonehenge - Scor Hill Circle. A traditional Dartmoor clotted cream tea awaits us at the prestigious Gidleigh Park Hotel with a chance to explore the unique gardens. Padstow on the north Cornwall coast is the destination for a walk around the headland into the Camel Valley, home to celebrity chef Rick Stein, an ideal place to try England's best Fish and Chips. Across the estuary we walk to St Enodoc, resting place of the famous English poet laureate Sir John Betjeman. Our last day takes us to Tintagel, legendary birth place of King Arthur, walking the winding rocky coast path Tintagel Castle is revealed to us, we stop and explore or continue along the coast where men and women toiled for over 800 years to quarry slate from the cliffs battered by Atlantic gales and high seas.

Alas all journeys come to an end and we bid you all farewell at Bodmin until the next time you enjoy a walking tour with us.
